Google reviews might be the single highest-return marketing asset a local business has. They build instant trust with people deciding whether to call you, and they're one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide who shows up in the local map results. The good news: getting more of them isn't luck — it's a system.
Why reviews matter so much
Two reasons. First, trust: most people read reviews before choosing a local business, and a stack of recent 5-star reviews can be the deciding factor between you and the competitor down the street. Second, rankings: the quantity, quality, and recency of your reviews help determine where you appear in Google's local pack and Maps. More good reviews tends to mean more visibility, which means more customers, which means more reviews — a flywheel.
1. Just ask — at the right moment
The number one reason businesses don't have reviews is that they never ask. Most happy customers are glad to leave one if you simply ask. The key is timing: ask right at the peak of their happiness — just after a great result, a successful appointment, or a thank-you. That's when the kind words flow naturally.
2. Make it frictionless
Every extra step loses people. Don't make customers search for you on Google — hand them a direct review link (Google gives you one in your Business Profile) via text or email so they land straight on the review box. In person, a small card or sticker with a QR code works wonders. The easier it is, the more reviews you'll get.
3. Build it into your routine
One-off bursts don't move the needle; consistency does. Make the ask part of how you close out every job or visit, and consider a simple follow-up text a day or two later. A steady trickle of fresh reviews beats a one-time pile, because recency counts.
4. Respond to every review
Reply to all of them — positive and negative. Thank happy customers, and respond to criticism calmly and professionally with a path to make it right. Google rewards engaged profiles, and prospective customers watch how you handle the tough ones just as closely as the glowing ones.
One rule, no exceptions: never buy fake reviews or offer payment for them. It violates Google's policies, can get your reviews removed or your profile penalized, and erodes the trust you're trying to build. Earn them honestly.
Make your profile worth reviewing
Reviews work best on a complete, optimized Google Business Profile — accurate hours, photos, services, and categories. If your profile is thin, fixing that first makes every new review count for more. This is one of the first things we tackle for local clients.
